Sarah Walters Memorial Fund

The Sarah Walters Memorial Fund was established in Spring 2007 to raise funds to purchase a vital piece of equipment that will be Niagara’s first Breast Coil (with integrated biopsy capabilities) as part of an MRI system for the St. Catharines General Hospital.

Research has credited MRI machines with detecting cancer that has been missed by mammography and clinical examination, the current standard practice. Finding these cancers as early as possible will increase the chances of successful treatment.

NEWS UPDATE:  SUMMER 2009

"A Family’s Dream Comes True"

Sarah Walters, loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother, quietly passed away on Sunday, March 4th, 2007 while anxiously awaiting an appointment for a specific breast screening MRI procedure in Hamilton. While the St. Catharines General Hospital has an MRI, it did not have the coil required to do the specific breast screening that Sarah needed at that time.

To honour her memory and reduce wait times, the Walters family established a memorial fund in Sarah’s name to raise the required funds to purchase Niagara’s first MRI Breast Coil.

Due to the Walters family’s dedication to this cause and the support of our community, $132,000 has been raised. The Breast Coil has been screening patients since July 2009. Dr. Amit Mehta, Chief of Diagnostic Imaging was quoted: "It’s going to make a dramatic impact on the healthcare of all Niagarans."

It is with sincere gratitude that we thank the Walters family. Sarah’s memory will live
on and lives will be saved because of your dedication.
