The “Heartbeat” campaign was the Foundation’s 2005 initiative to raise funds for the purchase of a new Echo-Doppler Machine to aid in the diagnosis of cardiac patients.
The campaign goal of $300,000 would purchase Echo-Doppler machines that use sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart. It is a painless, non-invasive form of imaging that enables cardiologists to see the heart beating and to visualize its many structures.
In April 2006, three brand new GE Vivid-7 cardiovascular ultrasound systems were installed along with two new Echo PAC workstations at St. Catharines General Hospital at a cost of $550,000. With these purchases, the echo lab was transformed into a state-of-the-art fully digital echo lab.
The improvements in image quality compared to the old VHS tape system are readily apparent and this has translated into improved patient care. The digital system has allowed for easy retrieval of patients previous studies for direct side-by-side comparisons and images can be sent to other institutions without degradation of image quality.
