Palliative Care Unit

The primary aim of the Palliative Care Unit at the St. Catharines General Hospital is to provide exemplary care and support to patients with advanced malignant disease or other end stage diseases. Care is provided by an interdisciplinary team in the palliative care unit, or when possible, and appropriate, in the patient’s home in partnership with community care providers and family members.

The Palliative Care Unit moved from Hotel Dieu to the General Hospital site in Sept 2003 and our team of physician, social work, homecare, dietary, physiotherapy, pharmacy, community hospice, pastoral care, nursing and clerical grew to include speech therapy, occupational therapy and volunteers. Our unit consists of six semiprivate beds and five private room (shared bathroom), team office, family and quiet room, and kitchenette for patients, families and staff. We have a dedicated, specially trained nursing team, and on-site volunteers and homecare coordinator.

The on-going work of the Palliative Care Unit has been greatly helped by many kind donations from patients and their family and friends.
